This hill is located at the end of the Yamanote Plateau in the southern part of Kita Ward, Tokyo. It is located to the west of Oji Station on the JR Keihin Tohoku Line, and is a steep cliff. The name of the place comes from the fact that the Toshima clan, a powerful clan in this area, enshrined Asuka Myojin Shrine here during the Genko era (1321-1324) to protect their castle. During the Edo period, it was a famous cherry blossom spot along with Ueno and Mukojima (the cherry blossoms were donated by Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune). It also had a great view, and was popular with Edo citizens. In 1873 (Meiji 6), it was designated as one of the five major parks in Tokyo Prefecture by decree of the Dajokan. To the north, the Shakujii River (Otonashi River) meanders and frequently floods, so construction was carried out to build a tunnel under the mountain, which was completed in 1983. Today, it is Asukayama Park. Asukayama Station on the Toden Arakawa Line is located here. [Kiyoshi Sawada] It has been known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot since the Edo period.
