...A system similar to the Pesantren had already been established before the advent of Islam. Those who become Santri are not satisfied with the basic Islamic education given in mosques or private homes, so they travel far away in search of a teacher (Kiyayi or Guru), build a hermitage near the teacher and live there, listen to the teacher's teachings in the lecture hall, pray in the mosque, and lead an ascetic daily life, forming a kind of community. There are no set rules for the content of the studies or the period of training, and there are considerable differences between schools and individuals, and the number of Santri varies from around 20 to over 500....
