…In 1937, a particle that was thought to be a meson predicted by Hideki Yukawa was discovered in cosmic rays, attracting attention. This particle did not have nuclear force and was not predicted by Yukawa, but in 1947, Cecil Frank Powell (1903-69) and his colleagues in England used a newly developed nuclear emulsion to discover the π meson predicted by Yukawa in cosmic rays, and the muon particle produced by its natural decay. After that, the search for new particles in cosmic rays became active, leading to the discovery of Λ particles and K mesons, but in the 1950s, high-energy accelerators were developed, making it possible to artificially generate various particles, and the mainstream of research shifted to accelerator experiments. …
