Skiing developed against the backdrop of the European Alps. There are downhill, slalom (slalom), giant slalom, super-G (a mixed event between giant slalom and downhill), and combined events. All of these are dynamic events in which participants ski down steep mountains, and the only competition is time. It is the star event of the Winter Olympics, and consists of four events: downhill, slalom, giant slalom, and super-G, as well as combined events, in which the time spent in slalom and downhill is added together, and super combined events, which combine slalom and super-G. Traditionally, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Northern Europe, and the United States have produced strong skiers in the Olympics and World Cup. Japan's only medal was won by Igaya Chiharu in the slalom at the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Olympics, where he won a silver medal. ヨーロッパのアルプス山系を背景に発達したスキー競技。滑降競技，スラローム（回転競技），大回転競技，スーパーＧ（大回転と滑降の中間的種目），複合競技があり，いずれも急峻(きゅうしゅん)な山から滑り降りるダイナミックな競技で，所要時間のみを競う。冬季オリンピックの花形種目で，滑降・回転・大回転・スーパー大回転の４種目に，回転と滑降のタイムを合計する複合や回転とスーパー大回転を組み合わせるスーパー複合などを加えて競われる。オリンピック，ワールドカップでは伝統的にオーストリア，スイス，フランス，イタリア，北欧，アメリカが強豪を輩出している。日本は1956年のコルチナ・ダンペッツオオリンピック回転の猪谷千春の銀メダルが唯一のメダル獲得，2006年のトリノオリンピックの同じく回転で，皆川健太郎が４位，湯浅直樹が７位と健闘した。→ノルディック競技
