An isolated small atoll located in the western North Pacific Ocean, about 2,500 km northeast of Guam. It has been a U.S. territory since 1899. It was uninhabited for a long time, but its importance increased when Pan American Airlines opened a relay base on it in 1935. During the Pacific War, it was occupied by the Japanese military and was called Otori Island. Since 1972, almost the entire area has been under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Air Force. 北太平洋西部,グアム島東北東約2500kmに位置する孤立した小環礁。1899年以降米領。長く無人島であったが,1935年パン・アメリカン航空会社の中継基地開設により重要性を増した。太平洋戦争中日本軍が占領,大鳥島と呼ばれた。1972年以降,ほぼ全域が米空軍の管轄下に置かれている。陸地面積6.5km2。人口は気象観測所などの施設関係者約300人(1995)。
