Lewisia - Lewisia

A hardy perennial plant of the Portulacaceae family (APG classification: Aquilinaceae). Approximately 20 species are distributed in northwestern North America. It has a fleshy rhizome that is almost stemless. Narrow, fleshy leaves grow directly from the rhizome and grow densely. From April to June, it produces a flower stalk, at the end of which one or many flowers bloom. Flower colors include white, pale pink, red, and yellow. The well-known L. cotyledon Robins. grows wild in gravel and among rocks in the high mountains from Oregon to California. It is resistant to dryness but weak to humidity, and there are many horticultural varieties. It produces beautiful, many flowers in a panicle, and is sold commercially as a potted plant. Flower colors include peach, pink-pink, orange (sour orange), and white.

スベリヒユ科（APG分類：ヌマハコベ科）の耐寒性多年草。北アメリカ北西部に約20種分布する。ほとんど無茎で多肉の根茎をもつ。幅が狭く肉質の葉を根茎から直接出し、密に茂る。4～6月、花茎を出し、その先に一花または多数の花をつける。花色は白、淡桃、赤、黄などがある。よく知られるコチレドンL. cotyledon Robins.はオレゴンからカリフォルニア州の高山の礫地(れきち)や岩の間に自生し、乾燥には強いが湿気に弱く、園芸品種も多い。円錐(えんすい)花序に多数の花をつけて美しく、鉢花として市販される。花色は桃、桃紅、橙(ダイダイ)、白などがある。
