A city located on the Omiya Plateau in central-eastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. The city developed as a post town and market town on the Nakasendo road, and once produced Okegawa enji. The city is served by the Ken-O Expressway and the Takasaki Line. Since a large precision machinery factory moved in in 1941, the number of factories in the vicinity has increased, but since the 1960s, the area has rapidly developed into residential and commercial areas, and the large factory was relocated in 1981, with the site converted into housing and parks. The surrounding area was once a major producer of wheat and sweet potatoes, but the rapid development of residential areas has led to a shift to urban agriculture such as fruit cultivation. 埼玉県中東部,大宮台地上にある市。1970年市制。市街は中山道の宿場町,市場町として発達,かつて桶川臙脂(えんじ)を産した。圏央道,高崎線が通じる。1941年に精密機械の大工場が進出して以来,付近に工場も増加したが,1960年代から宅地化,商業地化が急速に進み,大工場は1981年に移転,跡地は宅地,公園などに転用された。周辺は麦,サツマイモ多産地であったが急速な宅地化の影響で果樹栽培など都市型農業へ転換している。荒川の河川敷に,小型飛行機用のホンダ・エアポートがある。25.35km2。7万4711人(2010)。
