Sterling Area (English spelling)

...countries whose national currencies are linked to the British pound. Also called the sterling area. Immediately after the outbreak of World War II, Britain designated the Commonwealth countries (except Canada), Iceland, Iraq, and others as exchange-controlled areas (pound areas), and implemented a free exchange system within the area. In principle, dollars acquired were concentrated in Britain under a dollar pool system, and dollars were centrally spent and managed.
