The protagonist, Zeno Corsini, a bourgeoisie man who has fallen into idleness, writes about his life and analyzes his disillusionment, contradictions, and suffering in an attempt to recover from his own depression, following the advice of a psychiatrist. Thanks to E. Montale's keen eye and the efforts of his friend J. Joyce, the story established the name of this isolated old writer from Trieste. As for its technique, it broke with traditional structure and style by making full use of irony and metaphor, and as a theme, it deals with individual neurosis, but also anticipates the anxieties of modern life by superimposing them on the illnesses of the historical crisis of Europe between the two world wars, thus setting a new course for 20th century literature. ...
