Totsukawa

A river that flows through southern Nara Prefecture. The Tennokawa River originates near Sanjo-ga-take in the Omine Mountains, flows west, enters the Ooto area of ​​Gojo City, turns south, passes through Sarutani Dam, and becomes the Totsukawa River at Tsujido in the same town. It meanders between the Omine Mountains and the Obako Mountains, creating a V-shaped valley, joining the Funano River, Kawarahi River, Asahi River, and Kanno River, and flows south through Totsukawa Village, entering Wakayama Prefecture as the Kumano River, and flowing into the Kumano Nada Sea in Shingu City. It is approximately 114 kilometers long. The coast is dotted with gentle slopes, farmland and villages. After World War II, three dams, Saruya, Kazaya and Futatsuno, were built as part of a power development project. The Nishikumano Highway that runs along the river became National Route 168, linking Gojo City and Shingu City.

奈良県南部を流れる川。上流は大峰(おおみね)山脈の山上(さんじょう)ヶ岳付近に源を発する天ノ川(てんのかわ)で、西流して五條(ごじょう)市大塔(おおとう)町地区に入って流路を南に転じ、猿谷(さるたに)ダムを経て同町辻堂(つじどう)で十津川となる。大峰山脈と伯母子(おばこ)山地との間を嵌入蛇行(かんにゅうだこう)してV字谷をつくり、舟(ふな)ノ川、川原樋(かわらひ)川、旭(あさひ)川、神納(かんの)川などをあわせ、十津川(とつかわ)村を南流して和歌山県に入り熊野川となり、新宮(しんぐう)市で熊野灘(なだ)に注ぐ。延長約114キロメートル。沿岸の所々に緩傾斜地が開け、畑地と集落が点在する。第二次世界大戦後、電源開発事業によって猿谷、風屋(かざや)、二津野(ふたつの)の3ダムがつくられた。川沿いに通ずる西熊野街道は、五條市と新宮市を結ぶ国道168号となった。
