Okutadami

Japanese: 奥只見 - おくただみ

The name of the area upstream of the Tadami River, which flows along the border between Niigata and Fukushima prefectures. It is mainly known in Niigata prefecture, but in Fukushima prefecture it is called Oku-Aizu. It refers to the area upstream of the Tagokura Dam, surrounded by mountains over 2000m above sea level, such as the Echigo Sanzan and Hiragatake. This area consists of steep mountains and narrow valley plains, and is one of the snowiest areas in Japan. In the early modern period, the Takada Domain developed the Ueda and Shiramine Silver Mine near Ginzan-daira along the Kitanomata River, and a mining town with over 1000 houses flourished. After the silver mine was closed, a dezukuri settlement and a pioneer village were also built, but most of them were submerged when the Tagokura Dam and Okutadami Dam were built as part of the Okutadami power source construction project based on the Comprehensive National Land Development Act, which began in 1953.

新潟･福島県境を流れる只見川上流の地域名。主として新潟県における呼称で，福島県では奥会津という。越後三山，平ヶ岳など標高2000m級の山々に囲まれた田子倉ダムより上流の地域を指す。この地域は急峻な山地と狭い谷底平野からなり，日本有数の豪雪地帯でもある。近世初期，北ノ又川沿いの銀山平付近で，高田藩によって上田･白峰銀山が開発され，戸数1000余の鉱山町が栄えたこともあった。銀山閉鎖後，出作り集落，開拓村もつくられたが，1953年から始まった国土総合開発法に基づく奥只見電源工事により，田子倉ダム，奥只見ダムが造られ，それらの大半が水没した。
