He was born in Tagaste, Numidia, North Africa, to a pagan father, Patricius, and a Christian mother, Monica. According to his autobiography, Confessions, written at the age of 46, he went to Carthage at the age of 16 to study liberal arts, focusing on rhetoric, but cohabited with a woman and gave birth to a son, Adeodatus.
