…A general term for insects belonging to the family Muscidae, subfamily Stomoxyinae, order Diptera, or one of these. The Japanese name Stomoxys calcitrans comes from the fact that they bite and suck the blood of warm-blooded animals such as cattle and horses, and the English name stable fly comes from the fact that they are often found around livestock sheds.
