A military commander in the Momoyama and early Edo periods. His childhood name was Nagamitsu, and he was called Sakyo no Daiyu (Left Capital Lord), and later Kiinokami (Lord of the Province of Kii). He served Toyotomi Hideyoshi together with his father Nagamasa, and participated in the siege of Odawara in 1589 (Tensho 17). He traveled to Korea several times when Hideyoshi dispatched troops to Korea, and in 1597 (Keicho 2) he was surrounded by a large Ming army during the siege of Ulsan Castle, and fought a hard battle. He returned to Japan after Hideyoshi's death in 1598. During this time, in 1593 (Bunroku 2), he and his father were given the province of Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), and in 1595, he was temporarily exiled to Noto (Ishikawa Prefecture) due to slander by Ishida Mitsunari. In the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), he attacked Gifu Castle as the vanguard of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and in recognition of his achievements, Ieyasu awarded him 376,000 koku of land in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture). He died in Wakayama on August 25, 1600, but as he had no children, his younger brother Nagaakira inherited the fief. In 1620 (Genwa 6), he was transferred to Hiroshima in Aki, and the fief was passed down from generation to generation until the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures.
