World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession

In addition, the Federation of Arab Teachers (FAT), which is organized by Arab countries, and the Confederation of Latin American Teachers (CEA), which is organized by Latin American countries, are active as independent regional organizations. In addition, there is the International Federation of Teachers Associations (IFTA, founded in 1926), which has a European-centered prewar tradition, and the Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de l'Enseignement Secondaire Officiel (FIPESO, founded in 1912). The World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession (WCOTP, founded in 1946, renamed in 1951), which includes these organizations, has been active as an international teacher organization, with teachers' unions such as the Japan Teachers Union as members. However, with the upheaval in Eastern Europe, symbolized by the fall of the Berlin Wall (the unification of East and West Germany), FISE's activities weakened, while in 1993 the IFFTU and WCOTP formed a new unified international organization, Education International (EI).
