German-born soprano. One of the most representative singers of the first half of the 20th century. She studied at the Berlin Higher Conservatory and made her debut at the Hamburg State Opera in 1910. She gained fame performing in operas by R. Wagner and R. Strauss, and in 1916 she moved to the Vienna State Opera. Recognized by R. Strauss, she played leading roles in the premieres of Ariadne auf Naxos (1916) and Die Schatten ohne Schatten (1919). She subsequently appeared at opera houses in London, Paris, Berlin, and other locations, and made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1934. In 1938, she left Austria under Nazi rule to move to the United States, and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1945. She retired in 1951, and thereafter taught the next generation of singers. In addition to opera arias, she recorded famous German lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, and others, and B. Walter often accompanied her in lieder. He has written an autobiography and several other books.

ドイツ生れのソプラノ歌手。20世紀前半を代表する歌手の一人。ベルリン高等音楽学校に学び，1910年ハンブルク国立歌劇場でデビュー。R.ワーグナーやR.シュトラウスのオペラで名声を高め，1916年ウィーン国立歌劇場に移籍。R.シュトラウスに認められ，《ナクソス島のアリアドネ》（1916年），《影のない女》（1919年）などの初演で主演を務める。以後ロンドン，パリ，ベルリンなどの歌劇場に出演し，1934年メトロポリタン歌劇場にもデビューした。1938年ナチス治下のオーストリアを後に渡米し，1945年に米国市民権を取得。1951年引退。以後は後進の指導に当たった。オペラ・アリアのほか，シューベルト，シューマン，ブラームス，ウォルフなどのドイツ・リートの名唱を録音に残し，リートではB.ワルターがたびたび伴奏を務めた。自叙伝ほか何冊かの著書がある。
