… Finally, the majority of French vocabulary is derived from Latin. However, a distinction can be made between the so-called “popular words” (mot populaire), which have been in continuous use from the Vulgar Latin period to the present day and still form the basis of the basic vocabulary, and the many “scholarly words” (mot savant), including abstract words, which have been consciously borrowed from written medieval Latin since the Old French period, and from classical Latin, especially since the Renaissance. “Popular words” include words of Gallic and Germanic origin, while “scholarly words” include words of Greek and Arabic origin, but French vocabulary also includes loanwords from dialects of Oiuil, Occitan, Italian (especially from the 15th to 18th centuries), English (especially since the 17th century), and other languages. …
