This saltwater shell mound from the middle Jomon period is located at an altitude of 3 to 7 meters at the foot of Mt. Katayama, on the eastern edge of the Asahiyama Hills in Asahioka, Himi City, Toyama Prefecture. It was designated a historic site in March 1922. The shell mound was discovered in July 1918 during pile-up work for the construction of Seido-ji Temple, a branch temple of Kokutai-ji Temple. At the time, Japan's first cave ruins, the Ozakai Cave, were being excavated in the area, and interest in the ruins was growing. A small-scale excavation was conducted in October of the same year, and a second excavation was conducted in June 1924, prior to the reconstruction of Seido-ji Temple, which had been destroyed by fire.
