…He was born and raised in Chicago's South Side, where Irish immigrants live, and after working in various jobs, he began writing novels while attending the University of Chicago. Using the lives of the poor in the area as material, he published three works, Studs Lonigan (1932), The Youth of Studs Lonigan (1934), and Judgment Day (1935), which depict the downfall of a boy in a big city at a time when the street and gambling halls had replaced the home, school, and church as educational institutions, in a meticulous Dreiserian naturalistic style and a stream-of-consciousness technique modeled after Joyce. In contrast to these masterpieces, he also published a five-part series, beginning with The World I Didn't Make (1936), which follows the fate of Danny O'Neill, a protagonist with the mental strength to rebel against his environment. …
