It is a programming language that is easy to learn and is used in a wide range of fields, including the Web and AI (artificial intelligence). It was developed in 1991 by the Dutchman Guido van Rossum. The name Python is said to have been inspired by Guido van Rossum's fan of the British comedian's TV show "Monty Python's Flying Circus."
Python is an "open source" programming language whose source code is freely available and can be improved and redistributed, so anyone can use it for free. In addition, its greatest feature is that its grammar is simple, making it easy to program with a small number of lines, and it aims to make programs that are easy to read for anyone, by adopting the "offside rule" that indents blocks such as conditional branching processing.
Many programming languages have programs called "libraries" that provide various functions when programming, but Python has many libraries that can be used for scientific and technical calculations, and these libraries are currently being updated. As a result, the use of Python is rapidly increasing in the development of programs that use AI technologies such as machine learning, which are essential for scientific and technical calculations.
Python is used in programming education at universities in the United States and Japan because of its simple grammar and ease of learning. In addition, the national exam "Fundamental Information Technology Engineers Examination" administered by the Information-Technology Promotion Agency (IPA) of Japan will include "Python" in the spring 2020 exam.

習得が容易で、WebやAI(人工知能)などをはじめとする幅広い分野で利用されているプログラム言語。1991年にオランダ人のグイド・バン・ロッサム(Guido van Rossum) によって開発された。Pythonの名称は、グイド・バン・ロッサムが、イギリスのコメディアンによるテレビ番組「空飛ぶモンティパイソン(Monty Python's Flying Circus)」のファンだったことから名付けられたとされている。
Pythonは、ソースコードを無償で公開し、改良や再配布が可能な「オープンソース」のプログラミング言語であるため、誰もが無料で利用できる。また、文法がシンプルで、少ない行数で簡単にプログラミングができる点が最大の特徴であり、条件分岐処理などのブロックを字下げする「オフサイドルール」を採用していることなどで、誰が書いても読みやすいプログラムを目指している。
多くのプログラム言語では、「ライブラリ」と呼ばれる、プログラミングの際に様々な機能を提供するプログラムが用意されているが、Pythonには、科学技術計算で利用できるライブラリが数多く存在し、現在もライブラリが更新されているため、科学技術計算が必要不可欠な、機械学習などのAI技術を用いたプログラム開発において、Pythonの利用率が急増している。
Pythonは、文法がシンプルで学びやすいという特徴から、米国や日本などの大学においても、プログラミング教育に用いられている。また、日本のIPA（独立行政法人情報処理推進機構）が実施している国家試験の「基本情報技術者試験」では、2020年春期試験より「Python」が出題されることになった。
