A major general electric manufacturer of the Mitsubishi group. In 1921, Mitsubishi Electric was established by separating the electric machinery division of the Kobe Shipyard of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding (now Mitsubishi Heavy Industries). In 1923, the company entered into a capital alliance with the US Westinghouse Electric Company (dissolved in 1941 due to World War II). Due to its relationship with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the company is strong in the heavy electric machinery division, and has played a part in providing technical support for the Mitsubishi Group's advance into the nuclear power and satellite communications divisions. It has also actively expanded into the home appliance and electronic equipment divisions, transforming into a general electric manufacturer. It strengthened its information and communications and semiconductor businesses. However, in the late 1990s, the Heisei recession caused a downturn in semiconductors and AV, and the company undertook restructuring to rebuild its business. In 2000, it established a joint venture with NEC to operate a display business for personal computer displays. Headquarters in Tokyo, factories in Nagano, Nagasaki, and elsewhere. Capital in 2011 was 175.8 billion yen, sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 3.6453 trillion yen, and net income for the period was 124.5 billion yen. Sales composition (%) is heavy electrical equipment 25, industrial mechatronics 22, information and communications 12, electronic devices 4, home appliances 22, others 15. Overseas sales ratio is 34%.
