The substantia nigra is a nerve nucleus located in the dorsal part of the cerebral peduncle, and is composed of two parts: the pars reticularis and the pars compacta. The cells of the pars reticularis contain a lot of iron and lipofuscin, while the cells of the pars compacta contain a lot of dopamine and melanin.
