During the Edo period, the production of bowls for daily use became popular. In particular, the flower lacquerwork, which requires the lacquer to be applied evenly without showing the brush marks, requires advanced skills. A traditional craft of Akita Prefecture. In December 1976, it was designated as a national traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (currently the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).
