A sect of Chinese Taoism. It is also called the Maoshan Shangqing School or the Shangqing School. It was perfected by Tao Hongjing of the Liang dynasty, but its origins date back to Wei Huacun, Yang Xi, and Xu Mu of the Jin dynasty. After Tao Hongjing, it was passed down through Wang Yuanzhi and Pan Shizheng, and was succeeded by Sima Chengzhen, Li Hanguang, and Wu Yun during the prosperous Tang dynasty. After the Song dynasty, Zhu Ziying and Liu Hunkang emerged, and they became influential through their ties with the imperial families of the Tang and Song dynasties. This sect, along with Tianshi Dao, is considered to be the most traditional sect, and is characterized by its emphasis on "contemplation" and its "high and clear advancement in the world." Representative works that show its philosophy include "The True Story" edited by Tao Hongjing, and "The Theory of Forgetting" and "The Tianyinzi" by Sima Chengzhen.
