During the French colonial period, the region was called Oubangui-Chari, named after the two rivers that flow through it, but the current name was adopted when the region became an autonomous republic in 1958. The name is said to be a reference to the ideal of the founding father, Barthélemy Boganda (1910-59) (who died in an accident the year before independence), of building a "United States of Central Africa" with the former French Equatorial Africa as its main component.
