… The lowlands just east of the port have been the historical center of the city since the Middle Ages. Among its attractions are the city gate built in the 12th century, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo (12th to 14th centuries) (the dome was made by Galeazzo Alessi (1512-72), a leading 16th-century Genoese architect), the Doria family palazzo (15th to 16th century), decorated with black and white horizontal stripes of marble like the Cathedral, and the former palazzo of the San Giorgio Bank (partly from the 13th century, partly from the Renaissance). Further north, on the hillside, is Via Garibaldi, lined with the splendid palazzos of the city's nobility. …
