A city facing Tanabe Bay in central Wakayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1942. The central city area was a junction of the ancient Kumano Kaido road and a port called Murotsu, which became the base of the medieval Kumano Navy. After 1619, it flourished as a castle town for the Ando clan, a chief retainer of the Kishu Tokugawa Domain. Binchotan charcoal, which is still in high demand today, was also exported to Edo and Osaka. The Kisei Main Line, Hanwa Expressway, and Kisei Expressway pass through the city. It is a distribution center for timber produced in the Kii Mountains, and lumber and timber processing are thriving. Fishing, seafood processing, pearl farming, and shell button manufacturing (chemical buttons after the war) are also carried out here. Tanabe Bay is a scenic spot with a ria coastline. Salt was once produced here, and there are many ruins related to salt production. Kashima, the mudstone dikes of the Torisu Peninsula, and Onibashi Rock are all natural monuments. Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, Yunomine Onsen, and Kawayu Onsen in the east are part of Yoshino-Kumano National Park, while the area around Gomadanyama in the north is part of Koya-Ryujin Quasi-National Park. In 2004, the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountain Range were registered on the World Heritage List (Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine and Kumano Pilgrimage Routes). 和歌山県中部，田辺湾に面する市。1942年市制。中心市街は古来熊野街道の分岐点，牟婁（室）津(むろのつ)と呼ばれた港で，中世熊野水軍の拠点となった。1619年以後は紀州徳川藩付家老安藤氏の城下町として栄えた。現在も需要の多い備長炭も江戸，大坂へ移出された。紀勢本線，阪和自動車道，紀勢自動車道が通じる。紀伊山地に産する木材集散地で，製材・木材加工が盛ん。漁業，水産加工，真珠養殖，貝ボタン製造（戦後は化学ボタン）も行われる。田辺湾はリアス式海岸の景勝地で，かつて製塩が行われ，製塩関係の遺跡が多い。神島(かしま)，鳥巣半島の泥岩岩脈，鬼橋岩はいずれも天然記念物。東部の熊野本宮大社や湯峰(ゆのみね)温泉，川湯温泉は吉野熊野国立公園の一部に，北部の護摩壇山周辺は高野竜神国定公園の一部に属する。2004年紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道が世界遺産条約の文化遺産リストに登録された（熊野本宮大社，熊野参詣道）。2005年５月西牟婁郡中辺路町，本宮町，大塔村，日高郡龍神村を編入。1026.91km²。７万9119人（2010）。
