A legend, tale, or heroic epic poem passed down among the Turks, with a character named Oghuz Khan (Oghuz Qaghan) as the protagonist. Among the various extant texts, the most detailed are the tale included in Rashid al-Din's Jami'-shi (Collection of the Histories) from the early 14th century and the tale written in Middle Turkish using Uighur script (also called Oghuz-nameh), which is believed to have been written in the same 14th century. The former tells the story of Oghuz, born as the son of Kara Khan, a direct descendant of Noah's son Japheth, ancestor of the Turks, who converted his mother and wife to Islam, eventually defeating his pagan father and his clan and seizing kingship, and then his six children, named the Sun, Moon, Star, Sky, Mountain, and Sea, each having four children, from which the 24 Oghuz clans emerged.
