Sweden's chancellor (1612-54). Born into an aristocratic family. He served as a powerful advisor to Charles IX, and later became chancellor to Gustav II Adolf. He cooperated with the king to establish the Council of State, and established the Diet Act, the City Administration Act, and other laws to reform the administrative system. He also founded the House of Lords to strengthen the rule of the nobility, and adopted mercantilism to promote the economy, enacting commercial and maritime law. He also worked to promote learning as rector of Uppsala University. He used his diplomatic skills to settle the foreign wars with Denmark, Poland, and Russia that had been ongoing since the previous king's time, laying the foundation for the construction of the Baltic Empire.

スウェーデンの宰相(1612‐54)。貴族の出身。カール9世の有力な顧問大臣として活躍，その後グスタブ2世アドルフの宰相となり，国王と協調して国務院を設立し，国会法，都市行政法などを定めて行政機構の整備･改革を断行し，貴族支配を固めるため貴族院を創設，経済振興を図るために重商主義を採用して商法･海事法を立法化した。またウプサラ大学学長として学問の興隆に努めた。外交でもらつ腕を振るって前王時代から続行していたデンマーク，ポーランド，ロシアとの対外戦争に決着をつけてバルト帝国建設の礎を築いた。
