Also known as the Ganges. A large river in India. It originates at the southern foot of the Himalayas, flows south and east, irrigating the Hindustan Plain, and joins the Brahmaputra River in the downstream to form a large delta before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. It is 2,510 km long. Its drainage area, including the Brahmaputra, is about 1.62 million km2 . Its main tributaries are the Yamuna, Ghagra, and Gandak. The upper reaches produce cotton, wheat, and sugarcane, the middle reaches produce rice and sugarcane, and the lower reaches produce rice, jute, and sugarcane. Around 1000 BC, Indo-Aryan people migrated south to the middle reaches and formed the Vedic culture while blending with the indigenous cultures. The lower reaches have seen the rise and fall of the Mauryan, Gupta, and Ghor dynasties, and have long been the center of the Indian world. It is a sacred river for Hindus, and is known for its personal deity, the Ganga. Bathing and washing away the remains of deceased people is considered an immense joy. There are many sacred sites along the coast, and pilgrims flock to them. → Related topics India | People's Republic of China | Hindustan Plain | South Asia Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
