French politician and mountaineer. Born in Lyon. Studied science and law and aspired to become a politician. Started mountaineering at the age of 16, and in 1944 climbed the Putrey Ridge of Mont Blanc via the Bremba Glacier. In 1950, as expedition leader with Lionel, Terray, Gaston Rébuffat and others, he attempted Annapurna in the Himalayas, becoming the first man to successfully summit an 8,000-meter peak. On the way back, he lost his fingers and toes to frostbite. His account of this experience, "Annapurna: The Virgin Peak," is known as a classic book. He later served as director of the National Mountaineering and Ski School in Chamonix, at the foot of Mont Blanc, and contributed to the development of sports as Minister of Sports. He also served as mayor of Chamonix (1968-1977). [Tokuhisa Kyuuou] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
