A fold that is convex upward from a horizontal plane is called an anticlinal structure, and the opposite is called a synform. On the other hand, a fold in which older strata are found toward the inside of the fold, regardless of the fold's orientation, is called an anticline, and conversely, a fold in which newer strata are found is called a syncline (Figure 1). In general areas where deformation is not very severe, anticlines form an anticline-like structure, and synclines form a syncline-like structure. …
