A village in central Shizuoka Prefecture, Shizuoka City, Shimizu. Formerly called Shimizu. In 1961, it was incorporated into Shimizu City (now Shizuoka City). It is located at the junction of the Tokaido (National Route 1) and the highway to Mt. Minobu (National Route 52). It faces Suruga Bay to the south, and in ancient times, Kiyomigaseki and Ikutsu Stations were located on the scenic Kiyomigata Lagoon. During the Edo period, it prospered as a post town. When the Tokaido Main Line was opened in the Meiji period, it became a resort and beach destination due to its mild climate and beautiful scenery, and Saionji Kinmochi, Inoue Kaoru, and Ito Hirobumi built villas there. Currently, the coastal area has been reclaimed and transformed into Okitsu Wharf of Shimizu Port. The mountain slopes and valley bottom along the Okitsu River valley are one of the main production areas of Shizuoka mandarin oranges. The Rinzai sect Seikenji Garden is a scenic spot.OkitsuSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
