A contemporary Chinese poet, prose writer, and scholar, his pen name was Pei Xuan. He was born in Donghai County, Jiangsu Province, but his family moved to Yangzhou (Jiangsu Province) when he was young, so he calls himself a Yangzhou native. After graduating from the philosophy department of Beijing University in 1920, he taught in various places in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and in 1925 he became a professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing. During the Anti-Japanese War, he transferred to Southwest United University in Kunming (Yunnan Province) when Tsinghua University moved south, and returned to Beijing in 1946, where he died of illness in 1948. He began writing modern poetry while studying at Peking University, and became known for his long poem "Destruction," but after becoming a professor at Tsinghua University, he turned to writing prose and researching classical Chinese literature, producing a large number of works. In addition to the poetry collection "Traces" (1924) and the prose collection "Background" (1928), the majority of his writings are collected in four volumes of the "Collection of Writings by Zhu Ziqing" (1953).
