...A tropical evergreen shrub flowering tree of the Rubiaceae family (illustration). Also known as Sandanka (three-tiered flower). It has many small crimson, orange, and white flowers densely arranged in a hemisphere, and is often used as a potted plant or cut flower because of its beautiful long flowering period. It is widely planted as a garden tree in the tropics. It is native to southern China and Malaysia. The leaves are opposite, obovate, 5-10 cm long, leathery, dark green, and slightly glossy. Many flowers are borne in cymes at the top of the stem, with thin flower tubes 2-2.5 cm long that open out at the end and split into four pieces. The flowers are about 1 cm in diameter and slightly fleshy. ...
