…In 1924, he supervised the editing of the Russian version of F. Lang's Dr. Mabuse (1922), where he further studied the effects of editing, which he had known since his student days, especially through the works of D.W. Griffiths. Realizing the limitations of theater, he turned to film, and for his first feature film, The Strike (1924), he teamed up with the experienced cameraman Edouard Tissé (1897-1961), and this marked the beginning of a lifelong collaboration. The Strike was more highly praised abroad than in the Soviet Union, and his next film, Battleship Potemkin (1925), which he was commissioned to shoot by the Central Committee, was enthusiastically received by audiences both at home and abroad, demonstrating the existence of Soviet cinema to the world and becoming a monumental work in the history of world cinema. …
