Sohei Takahashi

A painter of the Southern style in the late Edo period. His given name was Ame. His pen name and pen name were both Kusatsubo. There are theories that he was born in 1803 (Kyowa 3) or 1804 (Bunka 1), and that his death year is also unknown. He was the second son of Makiya, a merchant from Kitsuki, Bungo (Oita Prefecture). At the age of 19, he became a student of Tanomura Takeda, who was traveling in the area. The following year, he followed Takeda to Tokyo, and thereafter often traveled with Takeda. Takeda recognized and loved Tanomura's talent so much that he wrote in his book "Takeda-sho Shiyu Garoku" that he could not compare to his well-made works, but he fell ill and died young. His works range from elegant works such as "Bamboo Shoots, Bamboo and Dragonfly" (private collection) and "Peony" (Homma Museum of Art) to heavy works such as "Flowers and Birds" (Tokyo National Museum). "Collection of Kosatsubo Gashiki" was published after his death in 1860.

江戸後期の南画家。名は雨。字,号ともに草坪。生年については享和3(1803)年,文化1(1804)年とする説,没年も不明とする説もある。豊後(大分県)杵築の商家真木屋の次男。同地旅行中の田能村竹田に19歳で入門。翌年には竹田に従って上京,その後も竹田と共に旅行することが多かった。竹田は著書『竹田荘師友画録』のなかで,よく出来た作品は自分もおよばないと記すほどにその才能を認め愛したが,病を得て早世。作品は「筍竹蜻蜒図」(個人蔵),「牡丹図」(本間美術館蔵)のような清雅な趣のあるものから,「花鳥図」(東京国立博物館蔵)のような重苦しいものもある。死後万延1(1860)年に『集古草坪画式』が出版された。
