Rathenau, Walther
Born: September 29, 1867 in Berlin
Died June 24, 1922. German politician and businessman in Berlin. He studied philosophy, chemistry, and technology, and joined AEG, an electrical company founded by his father Emil, in 1899, becoming president in 1915. When World War I began, the Ministry of War established the Office of Wartime Raw Materials to secure raw materials, and as its director, he led the wartime control of the economy together with E. Ludendorff, Deputy Chief of Staff. After the war, he participated in the founding of the German Democratic Party, and attended international conferences as a specialist on the Treaty of Versailles and reparations. From May to November 1921, he was appointed Minister of Reconstruction in the K. Bildt cabinet, and advised the Prime Minister on implementation policies. In January 1922, he became Minister of Foreign Affairs and attended the Genoa Conference, but negotiations with Western countries did not progress, and on April 16 during the conference, he signed the Treaty of Rapallo with the Soviet Union, which caused resentment from the far right, and he was assassinated shortly after returning home, partly because he was Jewish. He wrote "Die neue Staat" (1919).
