Middle gate

〘名〙① 表門より内側の方にある門。※続日本紀‐霊亀元年(715)正月己亥「宴百寮主典以上並新羅使金元静等于中門、奏諸方楽」 〔周礼‐天官・閽人〕② 平安宮の、中和院(ちゅうかいん)の南門。※江家次第(1111頃)七「左右近衛各一人、移入自掖門中門〈神嘉殿之南中門也〉」③ 寺院伽藍の金堂前方にある門。※法隆寺伽藍縁起并流記資財帳‐天平一九年(747)二月一一日「金剛力士形弐躯〈在中門〉」④ 寝殿造の中門廊の途中に設けられた門で、寝殿南庭の入り口となる門。中門廊が短くなると、その先端につくようになる。※東寺百合文書‐へ・延喜一二年(912)七月一七日・七条令解「申立売買家券文事〈略〉中門壱処」⑤ 書院造で、主殿または広間の東南隅から突出した部分。寝殿造中門廊の名残。また、主な座敷の前庭に入る庭の門もいう。※匠明(1608‐10)寝屋集「又当世大成広間にしては、中門をつけ作るへし」⑥ 茶室の外露地と内露地との間にある門。※源流茶話(1715‐16頃か)「扨、内露地のかまへは中門中くくり・猿戸、境界と所有の物すきにより候へし」⑦ 東北あるいは新潟の民家で、主屋の隅から突き出した部分。寝室・出入り口あるいは厩として使う。
