The ancient shakuhachi (gagaku shakuhachi) is the oldest, originating in China during the Tang Dynasty and introduced to Japan during the Nara period, where it was used in ancient gagaku ensembles, but died out in the mid-Heian period (around the end of the 10th century). The actual musical form of this instrument is unknown, but an actual instrument is preserved in the Shosoin Repository.
