1880‐1941 He was one of the founders of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. He was a member of the Czechoslavic Social Democratic Party (renamed the Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party after 1918) from 1897, and edited the party's organ newspaper, Pravo Lidow (People's Rights), from 1908. He was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party the following year, and then to its executive committee. In October 1918, he led the Great Czech General Strike, and in 1919, after the birth of the Czechoslovak Republic, he became the leader of the Moscow faction of the Social Democratic Party. He founded the Communist Party in 1921, and from 1938, at the decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, he worked at the Comintern headquarters in Moscow.
