Japanese: ダンゴウオ(団子魚) - ダンゴウオ（英語表記）lumpfish

A general term for marine fish belonging to the family Scorpaeniformes and family Pandalidae, or one of these species. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the body is round. The English name means "fish with a lump." They are found in cold waters of the Northern Hemisphere, such as the Sea of Japan, the North Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the North Atlantic Ocean, and about 25 species are known. About 20 species are found in the waters adjacent to Japan, and 9 species have been reported from the waters near Japan. The body is spherical, usually covered with bony protuberances, and the thorax has suckers that are modified from the pelvic fins. With the exception of the water fish, most are small, less than 10 cm in length.

カサゴ目ダンゴウオ科に属する海産魚の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。和名は体がまるいことに由来する。英名はこぶのある魚の意。日本海，北太平洋，オホーツク海，ベーリング海，北大西洋など，北半球の寒海域に分布し，25種ほどが知られている。日本の隣接海域には20種ほど分布し，日本近海からは9種が報告されている。体は球状で，ふつう骨質の隆起物に覆われ，胸部には腹びれから変化した吸盤がある。ホテイウオを除けばほとんどが全長10cm以下の小型種である。
