...When Molière returned to Paris in 1758, his popularity temporarily waned, but he once again brought about the heyday of his time by premiering a succession of J. Racine's tragic masterpieces. After Molière's death in 1773, the Théâtre Marais and Molière's troupe merged to form the Théâtre Guénégaud, but in 1780, by royal decree, the Théâtre Guénégaud and the Théâtre de Bourgogne were united to form the Comédie-Française.
