…In this sense, many talismans can be called mascots, but they differ from talismans in that they can be used to refer to people or animals as well as objects. In the English-speaking world, the word became known after the performance of the opera La Mascotte (1880) by French composer Edmond Audran (1840-1901), and is said to be derived from the Provencal word masco (meaning witch or sorcerer). According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word first appeared in English in 1884.
