A late 5th century monastery near Aleppo in northern Syria. It is also called the Monastery of Simeon. It is currently in ruins. It is the largest and most important surviving remains of early Christian architecture in Syria. It was built after the death of Simeon (c. 390-459) to commemorate the faith he gave birth to while still alive, by ascetic practices (pilaster asceticism) for over 30 years on a pillar about 15 meters above the ground. It is a large building that has since attracted many pilgrims. The church has a unique plan with a triple-aisled basilica protruding in the shape of a cross on the north, south, east and west sides, with an octagonal hall about 10 meters on each side surrounding the Column of Asceticism (only the base remains today).
