A document issued to convey the orders of the Crown Prince, Empress, Empress Dowager, and Grand Empress Dowager. Although the format can be seen in the official orders, no such edicts remain today, and only edicts in the hosho style, which became popular from the Heian period onwards, have survived. From this time onwards, documents issued by princes, empresses, members of the imperial family who became head priests of temples such as Ninna-ji and Enryaku-ji, and quasi-third empresses, as well as documents in the senji style issued by regents and other families, were also called edicts. Currently, many edicts issued by princes on the side of the Southern Court who were active during the Nanboku-cho period remain.
