Single sculls (English spelling)

...There are no regulations on the material or size of the boats, but since 1982 the International Rowing Federation has set weight limits for different events, putting a stop to the expensive race to make the lightest boats possible. For example, the shell of an eight must weigh at least 93 kg, and the single scull at 14 kg.

The events in the Olympics and World Championships are (1) single sculls, (2) double sculls, (3) quadruple sculls, (4) four-oared shell without coxswain, (5) pair-oared shell without coxswain, and (6) eight-oared shell with coxswain, eights. Only the four-oared shell is a men's event, while the others are both men's and women's. The six men's and five women's events are open to all weight classes, and at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, (1) the four-oared shell (men's) and (2) the double sculls (men's and women's) were added as lightweight events (average crew weight of men's crew under 70 kg and women's crew under 57 kg).
