Sanemon Okamoto

Japanese: 岡本三右衛門 - おかもとさんえもん

His real name was Giuseppe Chiara (Chiara). He was a Jesuit born in Sicily, Italy. In 1643, he infiltrated Chikuzen Oshima with other priests and servants and was arrested. He was tortured in a prison in Koishikawa, Edo, and apostatized. He married, changed his name, became a religious official, and was kept in a Christian house. His oral statements, recorded in the "Kirisutoki" (Christ-ki) and other works, are important Christian historical materials.
