In the days before tonometers, intraocular pressure was measured by applying pressure to the eyeball with a finger (acupressure method) and measuring the level of pressure, but this method is still valuable today as it is extremely simple. Tonometers currently in use measure intraocular pressure by applying a certain amount of force to the eyeball and measuring the degree of deformation that occurs (indentation tonometer) or the force required to cause a certain amount of deformation (applanation tonometer).
