A theory on papacy advocated by Pope Gregory VII (reigned 1073-85) and others. It stated that the Pope, as the representative of Christ the King, had the highest absolute power on earth, and that the imperial power and all other secular powers should be subordinate to him. It is used in opposition to the imperial papacy of the Byzantine Empire and Henry VIII of England.
